An Extreme Autoimmune Protocol (X-AIP) Food Pyramid

X-AIP food pyramid 2.0

We’re doing an Extreme Autoimmune Protocol (X-AIP).

It’s a low-carbohydrate version of the AIP, designed to starve the detrimental beasties out of the digestive tract.

I called it X-AIP because it sounded snappy.

This X-AIP food pyramid is a work in progress & the image above is the 2.0 version.

In addition to excluding the higher sugar foods that are allowed on the AIP, like fruit, berries, winter squash, root vegetables & plantains, it omits some other foods (like alliums & the meat of coconuts) that can be problematic for a very leaky gut.

It does not exclude FODMAPS like cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, celery & mushrooms (that would be an XXX-AIP).

My husband Matthew & I are doing this together. He’s the one with the Autoimmune Condition. He’s also the one who was officially on disability leave from work yesterday due to liver damage from long-term use of methotrexate that was prescribed to treat his Psoriatic Arthritis.

He’s no longer taking the methotrexate because he doesn’t want to harm his liver further & so his arthritis is getting worse. And he’s trying to avoid taking painkillers, as they are also taxing for his liver. The combination of liver damage, no methotrexate, & limited painkillers means he is in pretty rough shape, so it might be difficult to tell at first if our AIP (started December 23rd) or our X-AIP (started January 1st) are having beneficial effects.

Matthew decided that there is no point in testing the AIP for months, if the culprit is a Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth that will be merrily thriving on the high-sugar AIP-legal carbohydrates.

So. 30 days on the X-AIP & then back to regular AIP.

I’m doing it with him because I love him, but also because I find this stuff fascinating. Hence the blog & all. It’s actually quite a profound experience to be so disciplined about food.

In truth, I am 99% on-board with the X-AIP. This version excludes caffeine altogether & I am still drinking green tea. With a demanding day-job & an impulsive return to grad school this month, I’m keeping the tea. But otherwise, I’m solid.

And Matthew is 100%.

  4. Very interested in how you are doing on this. I have just started the oligo-antigenic regime but think I need something slightly less extreme so may look further at your structure for eating …. I am just on 1 fruit and brassica veggies, salt and olive oil plus water … only day 4 but am worried if I will make it to end of 2 weeks let alone 3 …

  5. Alliums will be gone forever for me. Finding recipes without them has been difficult. When I took the lily family out of the equation, my psoriasis really started healing.
